Cookie and Browser Storage Policy
Last updated: July 2026
This policy explains how Privas Intelligence Ltd, trading as Privas AI, uses cookies and similar browser storage technologies. It forms part of our Privacy Policy.
A note on the title. Most of what we use is not, strictly speaking, cookies. The chat assistant uses your browser's local storage instead. We describe both here accurately, rather than calling everything a cookie.
1. Cookies and local storage — the difference
Cookies are small files sent to a website's server with every request.
Local storage stays in your browser and is never automatically transmitted anywhere. It is read by the page's own code when needed.
The distinction matters: the values our chat assistant keeps in local storage are not transmitted to third parties in the background the way a tracking cookie would be.
2. What the chat assistant stores
If you are a visitor chatting with an assistant on a company's website, the assistant uses local storage, not tracking cookies:
| What | Purpose | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|
| Session identifier | Groups your messages into one conversation | 12 hours, then expires automatically |
| Visitor identifier | Counts returning visitors in aggregate statistics | No expiry until you clear your browser data |
| Conversation copy | Lets your chat survive a page refresh | Until the session expires or you clear browser data |
These are randomly generated values. They are not linked to your name or identity unless you provide it, and they are not used for advertising, profiling, or tracking you across unrelated websites.
Being straightforward about the visitor identifier: it is set without asking you first, and it has no expiry. We do not consider that good enough, and we are adding a consent step before it is set. Until then, clearing your browser's site data removes it.
3. What the Privas AI website and dashboard use
If you visit privas.ai or use the customer dashboard, actual cookies are involved:
| Purpose | Set by | Essential? |
|---|---|---|
| Keeping you signed in and securing your session | Clerk, our authentication provider | Yes — the dashboard cannot work without it |
| Processing payments | Stripe, on billing pages only | Yes, for payment |
| Measuring website usage | Google Analytics | No |
4. Google Analytics — including inside the chat widget
Google Analytics runs across privas.ai. Because the chat widget and share-link chat pages are served from privas.ai, Google Analytics currently loads inside them too — including when the widget is embedded on another company's website.
This means Google receives the fact that a chat surface was opened. Google does not receive the content of your messages.
We consider this broader than it needs to be and are removing Google Analytics from the visitor-facing chat surfaces. This page describes the current position rather than the position we intend.
5. Third-party cookies
Beyond Google Analytics, cookies may be set by Clerk (authentication) and Stripe (payments) when you use those parts of the service. Each is governed by that provider's own policy. The full list of providers we use is on our Sub-processors page.
6. Your choices
Browser controls. Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies and clear local storage, usually under Settings → Privacy. Clearing site data for privas.ai removes everything described in section 2.
What breaks if you block them. Blocking essential cookies means you cannot sign in to the dashboard. Blocking local storage means the assistant will not remember your conversation across a page refresh and each visit starts fresh — the assistant still works.
Analytics opt-out. You can opt out of Google Analytics using Google's browser add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
Consent. We do not currently operate a cookie consent banner. This is a gap we are closing, alongside the consent step described in section 2.
7. If you are a business deploying an assistant
You are the data controller for your website's visitors. Your own cookie notice and consent mechanism must cover the browser storage described in section 2, because it is set on your visitors' browsers when they use the assistant. See section 3 of our Terms of Service.
8. Updates to this policy
We will update this page and the date above when our use of cookies or browser storage changes.
